Assault on Mother Nature

 Assault on Mother Nature
By Chhabi Subedi

Oh, my dear mother. Being a 72-year-old man and still carrying a frail body all along, but my love for you has not died down at all. However, thank you very much for sustaining our lives with utmost grace and abundance. In contrast, your children exploit you, pollute you, and hurt you the most, but you endure most of their misconduct. You seem unhappy, and your face is pale and solemn. I call you repeatedly, but still you don’t respond. It has made me anxious, my dear Mother Nature.

Our mother nature is weeping profusely, and tears roll down from her cheeks unabatedly. Dear mother, you look weak, and your body is in poor health. On top of that, natural calamities such as floods, earthquakes, infernos, hurricanes, and famines have inflicted much pain on you.

I can’t overlook or ignore the agony of my mother nature anymore. I am forced to make my own observation to understand the pain and anguish of my mother. I found that Mother was covered with many wounds, and those wounds gave severe pain and sleepless nights to my beloved Mother Nature.

My country is the land of Sagarmatha, where many great sages, hermits, and saints were born at the lap of Sagarmatha. These saints meditated in the pious land of the Himalayas and coined the phrase “Wasudhaiwa Kutumbakam. That means all the people of the world are a single big family.

The truth has it that all the people, irrespective of their color of skin and languages, are the children of the same mother earth. This truth cannot be denied or challenged. In order to sustain life on the earth, Mother Nature has done everything possible. She has created a perfect environment for every single creature living on the earth and underwater. Whether it is the deep ocean, the dense forest of the Amazon, or the merciless desert of the Sahara, Mother Nature has maintained the echo of life everywhere.

To elevate our mood, Mother Nature has bloomed beautiful flowers everywhere. Beautiful birds and butterflies are enough to steal our hearts. When Mother Nature has done every possible thing to sustain life for us, then why do we inflict so much pain on our mother? The lesson of life that Mother Nature has given to humankind, even the best universities of the world have failed to provide. I have been the witness of such development for the last couple of years.

Most people have taken Mother Nature’s benevolence for granted. I pretend to be generous and kind towards Mother Nature, but deep down I am not. I need to discover me, a real me that has always been a part of Mother Nature. If I recognize a real me, only then can I tell the people who they are and what their responsibilities are for Mother Nature.

Enough is enough, and now people should better stop beating around the bush. It is time to swing into action with proper understanding. Look at Mother Nature. She hangs in the space and circles the Sun. She has performed her duty since time immemorial. Moreover, how kind is the heart of Mother Nature, as she has been feeding the hungry mouths of about 8.142 billion people of the world.

Mother Nature has provided almost everything for us to live on the earth, but in return, how have we responded to her kindness? We are producing the weapons of mass destruction and killing innocent human lives. In the name of industrialization and urbanization, the world has become much uglier today than ever before. Global warming and all kinds of pollution have wreaked havoc on nature. As a result, the world is facing floods, droughts, food crises, and rising temperatures worldwide.

Economically rich countries have become more irresponsible. They are using their military might against the weak countries. They dictate to them to act in a particular manner. If they do not agree with them, then mighty nations retaliate aggressively. They go for regime change or create political and financial crises in those countries. All these are tactics rich and powerful countries apply to bring the poor countries, which do not agree with them.

Let’s not forget a very basic and fundamental rule of nature. We are not here to live for two hundred years. We have to go away from here, leaving everything behind. We carry nothing from this world. Then why do so many people tend to hoard so much wealth? Remember, the wealth we need here is useless in the world of God. The wealth is worth its value; there is kindness, help, and good work.

Let’s live like a world family. No grudges and no complaints anymore. Let’s live with the spirit of brotherhood and mutual respect for each other. Has Mother Nature discriminated in supplying life-supporting items such as food, water, air, and sunlight? If not, then why do many courtiers battle against each other to grab such natural resources of others?  Be happy and content with what Mother Nature has given to us. If this simple rule of life is followed, then there will be no war anymore.

Please make an important note that the world has to fight against two enemies: the bad intentions of the people and pollution. People’s bad intentions will cause international conflicts, and such conflicts eventually lead to devastating war. On the other hand, pollution will destroy natural surroundings, and that will cause natural calamities. The world is watching rather helplessly the unimaginable destructions of Mother Nature in the form of floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, and droughts.

Thus, I would like to make a humble request with the concerned authority of the United Nations (UN) to act wisely before it is too late. I am not against the modern development, but it should go without damaging Mother Nature. No development can bring prosperity and well-being to people at the cost of Mother Nature.

Now time has come to understand our responsibilities towards Mother Nature. Let’s join our hands together to build a universal home where all human beings should live with the spirit of brotherhood. I’m dead sure such an act of ours will certainly bring a bright smile to the face of our Mother Nature.
