THE CRUSADER: a short story

Image
THE CRUSADER A Short Story By LB Thapa Sabitri is outspoken and direct, and at times, she is even aggressive in making herself heard. Because of her straightforward nature, not only women but many men praise her vociferously. Sabitri is a crusader. She would always take the side of women and fight for their rights. However, Sabitri’s parents did not like their only daughter poking her nose into the affairs of others and landing in trouble for nothing.   "Many times I have advised you to complete your graduation; after that, you can do whatever you want to do in your life. But my advice has only fallen on your deaf ears", complained Ghanashyam irritatingly. He turned to his wife, who supported her husband and asked her daughter to stop working as a crusader anymore.   "Look, Baba", Sabitri addressed her father and said. "I cannot see injustice against a woman. It is because she is powerless and cannot fight for her rights like men. Being a woman myself, I can...

BOOK REVIEW Radiating poetic resonance and the spectrum of life By LB Thapa Sushant Thapa, in recent times, has emerged as a poetic force to be reckoned with in the literary firmament. His rise as a prolific poet is a phenomenal feat of success, and that cannot be shrugged off. As a prodigy always displays talent from an early age, this is entirely true with the poet Sushant Thapa. He began scribbling poetry right from his school days and earned accolades. But Sushant took poetry seriously after he received his Master’s degree in English Literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, India.  He rather made an unassuming entry into the poetic world with his debut poetry book, "The Poetic Burden and Other Poems". The book was published by Authors Press, New Delhi, in 2020. Subsequently, a streak of success followed him as he managed to publish "Abstraction and Other Poems," published by Impspired Publication UK, 2021, "Minutes of Merit," p...

THE WAKE, IS A CALL FOR LIBERATION AND AWAKENING A book review  by Subash Singh Parajuli "The Wake: A Poetry Anthology" is a powerful collection of poems that explore a range of emotions, experiences of love, the personification of life, and an understanding of nature. This heart-rending anthology of poetry by Dr. Bhawana Pokhrel is a masterpiece of her poetry, crafted with such a flow of rebellious and delicate philosophical notions about the beauty and mystery of the world. Ambar Publication House, an Indian publication, has published the book, and it is distributed in Nepal by Bajarngabali Books Enterprises. Eighty-seven poems celebrate such intellectual perspectives on life, agony, love, and liberation for the discovery of eternity. One of the strengths of this collection is the diversity of voices and perspectives that the poets' hearts see and their eyes feel and that are represented in lyrical forms. The poems range from deeply personal reflections on loss to med...

NEW TO STREET LIFE, A short story by Sugam Gautam

Image
Sugam Gautam is a Pokhara-based writer and author. By Sugam Gautam The air was warm. Unlike most mornings of winter, the sun was sharp and the sky did not have a cloud in sight. Birds were chirping. The sun’s rays came through the window onto his mattress on the floor. Kale couldn't sleep anymore. He woke up, stretching his body.   Kale, aged 8, walked around his rented room with a worried expression. He had been living there with his mother after his father eloped with another woman. But there was no sign of his mother.   He walked around the room, searching. He found his red sweater, a blue jacket, and a pair of his favourite cotton pants. Apart from his clothes, he found a football that his mother bought for him last Dashain. Was a football enough to make him happy? Were those clothes enough to cover his pain of having no parents? Pokhara, one of the most expensive cities in Nepal, was a hard place to survive in.   Kale didn’t know if it was his fault his parents w...

ORPHAN OF ISLAM: A memoir with a message

Image
Orphan of Islam is a memoir where the author describes his troubled childhood.    By LB THAPA After finishing the reading of a biography of A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, I decided to read something different. And while scanning through the maze of books at Lake Side, Pokhara, I happened to find an old book, not very old, because its subject is as relevant today as it was then.   The book was Orphan of Islam and it was penned by Alexander Khan. The book was published by HarperCollins in 2012. I deliberately picked the book because I liked its title. Even more when I saw a round sticker on the cover page of the book where the book was compared with The Kite Runner , a novel by Khaled Hosseini. I have already read The Kite Runner long ago and I was very much impressed by the story of The Kite Runner---I thought Orphan of Islam of the same category.   Book: The Orphan of Islam Publisher: HarperCollins Publication: 2012 Page: 306 I read the book carefully and fini...
