SOUL OF THE SOIL

Image
SOUL OF THE SOIL Dr. Yam Bdr. Kshetry Writing essays is an art. But art is not always for art’s sake. It is for the sake of human life. So, it should be so contrived as to create certain impressions about human life. In the modern world, essays should offer something valuable to readers. They need to be the sources of some sort of knowledge about science, plant life, the animal world, and the human world.    Mr. Chhabi Subedi, writing essays in his mother tongue Nepali, partly fulfills the above objectives. In some of his essays, he pleads with the rich to offer a handful of rice or corn every day so that the poor would find relief; such ideas may be romantic but not realistic. Though he is basically a writer, making the readers aware of their weaknesses, he advises them to reap the benefits of modern science and technology and avoid the demerits that are likely to result from them.   Here is an essay in which he ponders over the process of birth and reb...

BOOK REVIEW An indispensable book for understanding the Gurung language and its grammar By LB Thapa The origin of the Gurung language is the subject of serious research. Unfortunately, to date, quite a few books have been written about the origin, development, and linguistic properties of the Gurung language. As a matter of fact, the Gurung language-speaking ratio has been constantly in rapid decline, say many Gurung language experts.  Many Gurung linguists are unanimous on the fact that, if timely action is not taken, the Gurung language will cease to exist sooner or later. At present, most of the Gurung people are scattered across the country, and many of them live abroad with their families. It has been found that Gurung children living abroad prefer to speak English. Most parents feel proud when their children speak English like native speakers. They think that teaching them the Gurung language will damage their English accent. Moreover, nowadays, even most Gurung ...

SHIRISHKO PHOOL AND PAGAL BASTI: Two unforgettable novels

Image
This article was originally published in The Hemingway Post, a literary magazine. SHIRISHKO PHOOL AND PAGAL BASTI Two unforgettable novels By LB THAPA The history of Nepali novel writing is a familiar one. Poet and writer Girish Ballabh Joshi penned “Bir Charitra” and tried to publish it in 1903. Thus, Bir Charitra is considered the first novel written in the Nepali language. This was when Nepal was under the clutches of the Rana Regime. Freedom of speech and writing would come under heavy scrutiny. Due to constant objections, the novel could not be published for several years. Finally, after much effort, the novel could see the light of day in 1965, when a complete version of the novel was published.  As far as the critical acclaim achieved by any novel in the early days it was of course, Rudra Raj Pande’s "Roopmati." The novel was published in 1934, and it immediately attained the status of bestselling in the country. The novel was widely read in the country and in ...

SPONTANEITY unveils the elixir of life

SPONTANEITY unveils the elixir of life By LB Thapa A good poem may not celebrate language, but it takes you on a short journey through life and directly enters your heart, mind, and soul. It stirs your imagination and gives a gentle tickle to your feelings. And this is what Sushant Thapa’s latest poetry book is loaded with.   Of the five published poetry books, Spontaneity: A New Name of Rhyme is the latest creation of poet Sushant Thapa. The poetry book under review has successfully encompassed a much wider theme of life. Of the total 68 vibrant poems in the book, it seems that every single poem has gone much deeper into life and brought true feelings of human nature. Such a novel effort by the poet is commendable, and therefore his poetry can be put in a different league of success.   As I have been closely watching the poet’s endeavors and crazy devotion to poetry for some time, his growth as an impulsive poet has already been established. It should not be an exaggerati...
