SIX MUST READ NEPALI BOOKS

BHUKTAMAN: A LITANY OF SUFFERINGS

Bhuktaman is the work of fiction penned by Dhirendra Sinal. Though the author says his book is a work of fiction, it is more like a memoir. The author has explained his own sufferings that he experienced in his own life. The story of the book begins with the suffering of a husband when his wife's health suddenly falls apart.

The husband takes his sick wife to different hospitals to get her treated. Then he experiences how life is so complicated for a layman in their own country. Bhuktaman is the story of the common people living in the country. The book states that life is difficult for ordinary people who have neither money to bribe nor high-level connections. The book has also highlighted how the people of the country suffer due to the irresponsible activities of our policymakers.

Poor work ethics and a lack of sincerity and accountability have increased the suffering of the people on the ground when policymakers do not make people-oriented programs. In fact, the book is the outcome of the writer’s own experience, but it also tells the stories of common people. That’s why the book is not confined within the periphery of the author’s grudges. It will also encourage the government and policymakers to make public health policies and programs much more effective and available for the common people of the country.

NEPALI SANGEET DARBAR

It is known that music has been an integral part of Nepal's religion and culture since the Vedic period. A pious land where great sages worshiped Brahma is also known as Himavatkhand. In ancient times,  classical music was prevalent, and its presence is found in the art, culture, and literature of ancient India, including Nepal.

Among these ancient nations, today only Nepal is an independent and sovereign nation. Among these ancient nations, it is proven that Nepal is the oldest nation where classical music is practiced, since Nepal is an independent and sovereign nation today. Following this tradition, a strong foundation of art and culture was built in Nepal during the Lichcha period. The history of Nepal's music has become unique due to cultural activities during the Malla Kingdom. It is found that under the rule of the Shah Dynasty and the Rana’s, the country made significant progress in Nepali music.

Religious places such as royal palaces and monasteries were the main art centers of the nation. So it seems that kings and rulers played an important role in the preservation and development of music.

The author has tried to write a brief history of Nepali music based on authentic facts by researching and exploring the sound of music, starting with Samaveda, classical and folk life languages, instruments, dance, and socio-cultural traditions of different periods. In brief, it can be said that the present book is the first of its kind ever written on Nepali music and is based on detailed research and facts.

KALI KARNALIKO LOKSAHITYA RA SANSKRITI

Yagyaraj Upadhya is a noted scholar and a folk-culturist. After having spent several years of research, Upadhya has finally come out with a brilliant book, The Folklore and Culture of Kali-Karnali. The author must be credited for his extraordinary work in collecting and documenting folklore and the culture of the Karnali region. If he had not undertaken such efforts, perhaps these precious cultural treasures would have fallen into oblivion.

For the understanding of the readers, the entire cultural folk land of Mahakali, Seti, and Karnali provinces of Sudurpaschim Province is called the Kali-Karnali region. This region is known for its fertile role in folklore and culture. The wealth of folklore and culture here is as vast and unique as the never-ending ocean. And the author, Upadhya, has made tremendous efforts to collect every scattered gem and make it into a vibrant garland.

This book is definitely the result of extreme hard work, and therefore, those readers, scholars, and researchers of the folklore and culture of the Karnali region will find this book a real treasure trove.

LAHANA RA TIR

Abhay Shrestha’s Lahana ra Tir was recently released at a grand program that was attended by Member of the House of Representatives Santosh Pariyar, critic Gyanu Adhikari, and a large number of literary figures.

Abhay Shrestha’s Lahana ra Tir is an anthology of poems. His poetry has an imaginative control of language, and this is his strength. The poetry book has four parts and consists of 49 insightful poems.

These poems, with their height of consciousness and the beautiful combination of art, have given Nepali poetry a new language. He first touches the heart and then shakes the entire soul, making readers take a plunge into the realm of imagination. The images of culture in his poetry have made their structures more dense and conspicuous.

The meaning of 'Lahna' is civilization. Some poems in the book have raised questions about whether civilization is heading in the right direction. Are the people who are at the helm responsible for their activities? Are we modern? Or what is the definition of being modern? These are some pertinent questions that the poet has raised in his poems.

These poems give a subtle indication that the market-controlled era is stabbing at the navel of human civilization. A representative poem of the pain, anger, and sentiments of the passengers in the crashed carriage of the best democracy.

There are some poems in the book that highlight women's sensibility with such powerful feelings, which are found only in a few pieces of literature today.

Poetry is the mirror of human civilization. To understand a country’s past, the best way is to read the poem of that time. In a similar way, poet Shrestha’s anthology has encompassed several subjects of public interest.

Many of his poems are heartwarming and full of messages. His poems resonate and cast magical spells on readers. An example of his brilliant craftsmanship in an outstanding poem has been translated for poetry lovers.

When an inept proofreader separated me like the letters of a word,
I was imprisoned by you in the prison of your heart,
as water trapped in a broken stream.
As fragrance is inseparable from flowers,
as greenery is inseparable from leaves,
so if the country were not with me, I would not be a rebel poet!

As a whole, the poetry book contains some brilliant poems. Poetry lovers will definitely enjoy reading the book.

EK SARKO MAYA

EK SARKO MAYA is one of the best-known novels written by G.S. Poudel. The story of the novel has taken up an important issue the country is facing today. There are irregularities in the process of foreign employment. If the Nepalese economy is breathing today, it is only because of foreign employment. The regular supply of remittances has kept the national economy floating. If any hitches disrupt the supply of remittances, the Nepalese economy will take no time to take a nosedive and fall flat on the surface.

The writer Poudel has brilliantly taken the whole subject and exposed the good, the bad, and the ugliest parts of foreign employment. Reading the novel Ek Sarko Maya is a story of Nepali youths who land in an alien country with a bundle of hopes. However, a few might find their dreams turn into reality, but for others, it is absolutely a nightmare. Still, many youths are sent back to their homes in coffins. This is also the reality of foreign employment, and this phenomenon cannot be overlooked or taken for granted.

This novel is the story of a Nepali youth who has come to the Maldives for employment and who, unknowingly, is trapped in some bad activities. The boy was well aware of his situation, but he did not make any effort to come out of it. Many young Nepalese make this mistake in foreign lands. His love for a beautiful model was nothing but an illusion. He was being exploited without his knowledge, and when he realized it, it was too late. The novel is full of action, thrills, and suspense, and that makes it a good read.

Many critics of Nepali literature say that the writer has employed a different writing style to tell the story. That makes the novel a bit different from other Nepali novels. After reading a 450-page novel that presents a terrifying example of hallucination. The book will take its readers on a journey through a different world. Altogether, the novel is well written, and it has a captivating story.

USLE DIYEKO UMER

BUDDHISAGAR needs no introduction, as he has already carved a niche for himself as a celebrated writer in Nepal. His recently published autobiographical book, Usle Diyeko Umer, has hit the bookstands all over the country. In this book, Buddhisagar has brought back his past memories of his early days in a most touching manner. The readers will be compelled to feel their own days when they were kids and free from all the obligations of life.

Buddhisagar has used simple yet vigorous language to tell about his own early days. The way the story develops, the readers are more drawn to the book, and then it will be impossible for the readers to put down the book.

Not only does he have a sweet memory of his early days, but the author also mentions his bitter experiences of life in a most sincere and honest manner. There are no exaggerations of any kind in the book. The memoir swirls with the time more like a river flowing along naturally. Such a nice explanation of the innocence of life increases the retention of the readers so that they come back to read and complete the story.
